Amigos De Honduras

Chris Parkinson joins us on this podcast to share about a trip that he took in February with the Rotary International to Honduras.  Over the last 30 years, Rotary District 7870 (includes 60 Rotary clubs in Southern NH and Southern VT) has sent mission trips and aid to Honduras, which is the second poorest country in the western hemisphere. Amigos De Honduras is a program the Rotary District 7870 and since 2001, has concentrated its efforts in three areas:

1. Medical Care - more than 22,000 medical and dental patients.
2. School construction & education - constructed 5 new schools, expanded 4 schools, and converted 2 buildings into schools.
3. Pure water - working with another Rotary partner, Pure Water for the World, installed over 10,000 water filters which provides clean water to more than 50,000.

The latest Mission trip was February 2 - 10, 2013 and the team had 28 members, led by Chris Parkinson (ninth trip).  Please join us to learn more about the Rotary International and an update on all of what was accomplished on this recent trip.

Collaborating for Healthier Children in NH

Heather Brown, Network Representative for Northeast Delta Dental joins us on our show this weekend to share about how Oral Health & WIC (Women, Infants, & Children) Nutrition programs are working together for healthier children in New Hampshire.  Heather was working on this project as a field study when she was an MPH grad student at the University of New Hampshire.  Please join us to learn more about this project and how it is helping children here in New Hampshire.  The project was funded in part by Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital and the Northeast Delta Dental Foundation.

Fisher Cats Oral Health Challenge

There is still lots of snow around, and it may not look like baseball weather, however, preparations are underway at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium for the opening day celebration for the 10th anniversary season of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats!  Mike Ramshaw joins us on this weekend's broadcast to share about the Fisher Cats Oral Health Challenge and the 2013 season.  The Oral Health Challenge had 750 participants in 2012 and they are well on the way to exceed that in 2013.  The challenge is for kids to brush twice and floss once daily for a week, complete the challenge form, and submit it to the Fisher Cats to earn two free tickets to a select game at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.  Have a child or know someone that would like to participate, details and the form are available at http://bit.ly/Xvdgcz. Run the Race

'Run the Race' is our feature for this weekend's broadcast as we enter the 2013 racing season.  John Mortimer with Millennium Running joins us to discuss the benefits of walking and running and the connection to wellness and good health.  John shares about his running career, and his involvement in the running community with his organization, Millennium Running.  Northeast Delta Dental sponsors a number of events each year, including the Mount Washington Road Race, Manchester Shamrock Shuffle, TD Bank Beach to Beacon, and the Frank H. Manchester Public Health Department

Tim Soucy of the Manchester Public Health Department joins Tom on this weekend's broadcast.  Tim will share with us the history of the department and its oral health programs.  Their main program is a school based dental clinic that serves 18 schools; of which approximately 2,000 second and third graders received 'no touch' screenings, 650 children received cleanings and fluoride treatments, and 170 received restorative treatments.  The Manchester Public Health Department also partners with CMC's Poisson Dental Clinic and the Easter Seals Dental Clinic.  Join us for an informative discussion and learn more about the Manchester Public Health Department at www.manchesternh.gov/website/Departments/Health/tabid/177/Default.aspx

Oral Cancer

Dr. Shannon Mills joins Tom Raffio for an informative discussion on Oral Cancer.  Shannon will discuss with the radio audience about 'How big a problem is oral cancer?"  In the discussion, topics such as risk factors for oral cancer, smoking, smokeless tobacco, cancer screenings, and what can I do to avoid getting oral cancer?  These are just some of the highlights of a very informative show on Oral Cancer.  Join us for this informative podcast!
