The mission of the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center is "to educate, incite and entertain learners of all ages in the sciences and humanities by actively engaging them in the exploration of astronomy, aviation, Earth and space science."
Our guest, Jeanne Gerulskis will share with us 'What's up at the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center?' We will first look back at 2017 for a short discussion on the challenges and accomplishments as well as a recap of the year's events and exhibits. In 2017, the Discovery Center had 40,000 visitors, including 9,000 school field trip participants.
Looking ahead to 2018, the center will feature two special exhibits; True or False – a fun and exciting package of activities for young and old, and Math Moves! – putting the ‘M’ back in STEM. Three new planetarium shows will debut in 2018; Wildest Weather in the Solar System, Mars, and Distant Reaches of the Universe. Bill Dunlap, President of the New Hampshire Historical Society joins us on this Thanksgiving Weekend broadcast to share with us about the New Hampshire Historical Society and several of its major initiatives for the coming year. A new project the society is excited about is the “Democracy Project: Renewing History and Civics in New Hampshire Schools.” This project is to address the decline in history and civics education over the past few years, which has adverse implications for the country. Bill will also talk about a recently completed project to “green” the society’s national historic-registered building, producing a 75% reduction in their carbon footprint. The 2017 Granite State Baseball Dinner presented by Northeast Delta Dental is the feature of this weekend’s broadcast and we are joined by Jenna Raizes of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats to share all the exciting things taking place at the dinner. The dinner is a fundraising event with proceeds benefiting CHaD, Ted Williams Museum, and the Fisher Cats Foundation. In 2016, more than $125,000 was raised through tickets, silent and live auctions, and raffle ticket sales. Since 2007, more than $1.57 million has been raised through the dinner. Guests will not only enjoy a delicious meal, they will also be able to meet special guests, collect autographs, and enjoy special presentations.
