The vision is for a 34 mile trail that goes from Horseshoe Pond in Concord to Newbury Harbor on Lake Sunapee. The event is a family event where children have the opportunity to meet Boston Bruins Captain Zdeno Chara at a fun and festive party. The theme for this year’s event is “All about Hockey.” This is a fundraiser event with proceeds going to the planned expansion of the Elliot Hospital Cancer Center through the Mary and John Elliot Charitable Foundation. Phil Taub joins us on this weekend’s broadcast to share about Swim with a Mission. Swim with a Mission’s main purpose is to raise money for veterans. Since 2017, the organization has raised $1.2 million for veterans through various events such as a corporate paintball shoot and the annual Swim Race and Festival held on Newfound Lake in July. Recipients of Swim with a Mission proceeds include The National Navy SEAL Museum, Veterans Count, Harbor Homes, Children of Fallen Patriots, and the Dan Healy Foundation. The mission of the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center is "to educate, incite and entertain learners of all ages in the sciences and humanities by actively engaging them in the exploration of astronomy, aviation, Earth and space science."
Our guest, Jeanne Gerulskis will share with us 'What's up at the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center?' We will first look back at 2018 for a short discussion on the challenges and accomplishments as well as a recap of the year's events and exhibits. Since 2013 when the Discover Center became a nonprofit corporation, they have served over 250,000 people from the general public, schools, facility rentals, and workshops.
Looking ahead to 2019, the center will feature two special exhibits; Virtual Fish Tank – a cool, interactive exhibit produced by the Museum of Science in Boston. The second special exhibit is the 50th Anniversary of the First Moon Landing. Two new planetarium shows will also debut in 2019; Moons of the Solar System and Apollo 50th Anniversary/ Stop by the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center and be sure to visit them on the web at www.starhop.com.
